“Do you have the time to listen to me whine
about nothing and everything all at once?
I am one of those melodramatic fools
Neurotic to the bone, no doubt about it”

Who would’ve thought the lyrics from “Basket Case” by Green Day could pertain to substance abuse, or tell so much about Billie Joe Armstrong, the band’s frontman? If you grew up as part of the so-called Generation X, you are probably familiar with this punk song. Other mega hits from that era which you may have heard include, “Welcome to Paradise”, “When I Come Around”, and “21 guns” (just to name a few).

It was just a few years ago, in 2012, when Billie Joe publicly shared a series of incidents that put him in rehab. Claiming undisclosed “health issues” during a band tour gave fans a hint about what was going on. But later, the band’s spokesperson announced that Armstrong had headed to drug rehab for treatment programs addiction of substance abuse. The singer never denied this fact, and has admitted that he’s been through years of alcohol and prescription drug abuse. Because of these stints in rehab, some of the whole band’s appearances had to be cancelled. His rehab lasted months, and took the whole band out of the spotlight for a while.

Along with his drug problems, the Green Day singer has a history of battling psychological issues. It was his struggle with anxiety which led him to start taking prescription drugs in the first place.

“Sometimes I give myself the creeps
Sometimes my mind plays tricks on me
It all keeps adding up, I think I’m cracking up
Am I just paranoid? Am I just stoned?”

These stanzas in “Basket Case” reflect the lead vocalist’s experiences with anxiety, a condition which was later diagnosed as panic disorder.

In the end, the artist was able to overcome his addiction through the help of treatment programs addiction and was able to clean about his substance abuse. The band may have missed out some gigs for a while, but now everyone is enjoying the benefits of his sobriety. As the song says, there is always a hope of recovery and everyone can have this hope by engaging in treatment programs addiction.

“Grasping to control
So I better hold on”
